The Oker below the dam is the most famous whitewater stream in northern Germany and the only one that offers whitewater up to 3+ / 4- all year round.
You can reach it by aiming for Romkerhall.
However, the Oker can only be paddled when the power station is working and water is being released into the riverbed (approx. 6m3/sec at the power station outlet).
When the Oker is expected to be navigable is announced every Monday by the Harzwasserwerke on a special page set up for this purpose.
Please pay attention to the information on the page and on site when planning your trip. For example, heavy rainfall or operational disruptions can lead to deviations from the plan.
Therefore, please also pay attention to any information on site.
The river
The river rises south-east of Altenau in the Oberharz and flows into the Aller between Celle and Gifhorn. Between the villages of Altenau and Schulenberg, the water is dammed up for energy production and drinking water supply.
The Oker offers the best conditions for whitewater paddlers over a length of around 2 km
The Oker is classified as WW2 in the upper section, Slalomacht and Hexe are generally considered WW3, the Geisterbahn is classified as WW3+ (some also say 4).
